Finding the Right Help: Advocating for Effective Trauma Therapy for Public Safety Personnel
Presented by the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT)
Date: Monday, October 26 2026
Time: 1:00-2:00 pm EDT
Exposure to potentially traumatic events is an inherent part of public safety work, yet knowing how to identify effective mental health treatment is rarely part of the training. When support is needed, public safety personnel and their families can face a complicated landscape of therapies, terminology, and providers, making it difficult to know what treatment is appropriate, what progress should look like, or when a different approach may be needed.
This webinar will provide participants with the knowledge to navigate those decisions more confidently. It will examine the distinction between trauma-informed and trauma-focused care, what it means for a treatment to be “evidence-based,” and why these differences matter when addressing the psychological impact of repeated exposure to trauma, loss, critical incidents, and the cumulative demands experienced by public safety personnel.
Participants will explore effective trauma-focused therapies, including how they differ in structure, approach, and the processes they target during treatment. Rather than viewing therapy as one-size-fits-all, the webinar will consider how treatment can be matched to an individual’s symptoms, needs, and goals. It will also examine the role of structured treatment planning and measurement-based care in evaluating progress and keeping therapy purposeful and responsive over time.
Importantly, participants will learn how to become informed advocates for themselves and family. They will leave with practical questions to ask prospective therapists, a clearer understanding of what quality trauma treatment looks like, and strategies for recognizing when care may not be producing meaningful change.
The goal is not simply to encourage public safety personnel to seek help. It is to equip them to recognize, access, and advocate for the right help.
This webinar is presented in English, with optional captions available in multiple languages.
